Woo hoo! It's only been a month since I've last posted. I'm doing sooo well.
Anyway, here's what the fam's been up to:
Amber - has been incessantly reading. She'll read an hour or two every night. She found a book on my shelf that I bought a year or so ago - "The 20th Century Treasury of Children's Literature." She has read it twice already, and it's probably 200 pages long. I think it's her favorite book.
She also found her birthday present on David's shelf - a book called "Dragonology." They had it on sale for a really great price at Sam's Club in January, so we figured we'd better get it for her. She keeps asking who it's for. We, of course, have not told her. Won't she be surprised? Probably not.
Jarom - is my constant child. Always does his homework and turns it in - on time. Always starts his projects in advance. It's such a relief to have a child like him.
I took Jarom and Amber to the WVC Fitness Center yesterday. They had a blast in the edutainment center while Meagan practiced with the swim team and I lifted weights. I promised I would take them swimming today, so I guess I'd better.
Cameron - finally got his Luxembourg report done on Wednesday. He ended up being almost 2 hours late for school and missed his science test. He, of course, did not tell me he was having a science test that day. I think his teacher let him make it up yesterday - I hope. I REALLY think that Cameron needs to be transferred out of the gifted and talented program (ie, Quest) and take normal classes. It's not that he's not smart enough, it's that he hates homework.
In any case, he and I did learn alot about Luxembourg. Did you know that General Patton is a national hero in Luxembourg and is buried in a military cemetary there? Me either, til now. They honor him every year on National Day and fly American flags along with Luxembourg flags. At least there's one country in Europe that still likes us.
Cameron turned 13 on Wednesday. Now he is an old man. He's even getting the whiskers and the hairy legs to prove it. Lucky boy.
Meagan - has been the busiest of our children lately, by far. On Tuesday and Wednesday she had a swim meet. On Wednesday she had an awards ceremony. Yesterday her history term project was due. Today she is working for Kailien. I really don't know how parents can handle having several children with extra-cirricular activities. How do they do it?
As far as the swim meets, they were long. We were there about 5 hours on Tuesday and about 4 hours on Wednesday. If we had stayed for the whole meet, it probably would have been 6 hours/day. Meagan came in dead last in every event she was in, but I was proud of her. I didn't even do any sports when I was growing up. She's a good swimmer, but she's only been on a swim team for 2 months. And, as she keeps reminding me, in January, she couldn't even walk because her knee hurt so bad. So, she has made alot of progress.
David - has been sickly this week. He's had bronchitis. Luckily it was caught soon enough that he hasn't had to go to the hospital. I didn't know how much I rely on him until I had to be the chauffer instead of him. There was no way I was going to ask him to drive the kids around while he was taking narcotics.
Trying to convince him to rest has not been easy. He is too enthralled with his saws and other tools. I'm just glad he hasn't cut off any of his limbs. Trying to convince his sisters that he can't come and do their yardwork hasn't been easy, either. I think he does more yardwork for them than he does at our house. He did try to saw down one of Tammie's trees yesterday. He is crazy.
Speaking of yardwork - yesterday, one of our neighbors had two guys cutting down some trees for him. One of them had a seizure and had to be taken away in an ambulance. The other one kept trimming the trees by himself.
A while later, I was in the tub and heard a series of loud explosions. I thought for sure David had gone and blown up himself and his oxygen tank. I jumped out of the tub and grabbed a towel and went to search for what I was sure would be the remains of my husband. As I got to the kitchen window, I could see him standing in the backyard looking up at the powerlines. I was SO relieved he was still alive.
Apparently, the tree guy in the neighbor's yard had moved his metal ladder up against a powerline. It blew out the power going 4 or 5 houses - including ours. Utah Power had to come and repair the powerline, so we were without power for about an hour.
Me - I decided to quit Curves and sign up for a family membership at the West Valley Fitness Center. This was so that David and I could exercise together (can't do that at Curves). Besides, I was getting kind of bored with the Curves workout. Maybe if I could have talked a friend in to joining and going with me it would have been more fun - and I tried, but it did not happen.
So, David and I went to the fitness center together twice, and then he got bronchitis, so I have had to go by myself anyway. Maybe next week. David is better at the weight room than me, but he so cannot keep up with me in cardio. I am sure it mostly has to do with his paralyzed diaphragm.
I feel like a basketcase today. I helped Meagan and Cameron finish their term projects for history - each of them stayed up until 2am the night before they were due and still weren't quite done the morning they were due. And then there was Meagan's swim meets and me having to drive everyone everywhere. Being a mom is a tough gig. Worthwhile, yes, but very tough.

Just Wondering
I am wondering how long my blogging is going to last. None of my friends are really in to blogging. Only ma soeuer Becky. She is probably the only one who reads this besides me. C'est la vie.
Anyway - this blog is going to be short.
Amber - gave a talk in primary yesterday about how excited she is about getting baptized this July. Yes, my baby really is almost 8 years old now.
Jarom - bought yet another Kirby gameboy game this past Saturday. He is REALLY obsessed with Kirby. The coat of arms he is making for himself even has Kirby on it. Kirby with a flaming sword. Doesn't get much better than that, does it?
Cameron - has almost brought his Quest grades up high enough that they just might have to let him stay in Quest. I think that 8th grade will be easier for him. Especially if he gets a math teacher that speaks English clearly.
Meagan - is performing in a dance concert this Wednesday. She and 3 of her friends coreographed a dance together. I hope it turns out well. Meagan has not had a lot of time to practice with them between swim team and sewing an elaborate Elizabethan dress.
David - went to the doctor for a physical last week. He was ok except that his liver enzymes were really high. High enough that the doctor asked him if he had started drinking alcohol. The doctor wants to see David again in 4 weeks. I asked him if the doctor had given him any suggestions of how to lower his enzymes - besides joining Alcoholics Anonymous.
Me - I am hanging in here. I worked full time Friday and today. I am trying to cope with an EXTREMELY annoying co-worker. We'll see how it goes. My friend Anna told me she would have been fired months ago if she had to put up with he-who-shall-not-be-named. Okay, I give in, his name is Andy. Maybe I am glad my husband doesn't go by his middle name (Andrew). Odd, I never thought of that before. I am SOOO glad Georgia will be back at work tomorrow because I can go back to working part-time. That, and Georgia is just so cool and funny - she's one of the best things about my job. I am getting healthier, but still not well enough to work full time all the time.
Jetta - I just have to write about her because she got a bath and a shave on Saturday. She looks and smells so much better! I got her leash out on Saturday so we could take her to Bark Avenue (Kailien's dog grooming shop) and she got so excited she was going to go somewhere, she was jumping all over the place.
Okay, for me, this was short!
Now for a really short DEEP THOUGHT:

Week 3,000,000
Okay, it's not really been that long since I last posted, but it seems like it.
I was reading thru the "Week 2" post that I wrote almost 3 months ago, and how things have changed! Those funny noises the suburban was making? $2,000 later, they're fixed. We had to get the whole rear axle rebuilt! If we had driven it even a week longer, I don't know if the car would have even been salvagable, so thank God for small favors, I guess. I don't even want to talk about what the Dynasty has been up to. Let's just say our cars have been revolting lately.
David and I have a theory that if you have 2 cars parked next to each other in a driveway, they somehow communicate to each other. How else could our cars always seem to be breaking down at the same time?
Meagan's knee is pretty much on the mend. She doesn't complain about it hurting her and that's a relief. Meagan signed up for High School about a month ago(scarey that she's already old enough for High School). She wants to be on the swim team, so the coach suggested she be on the West Valley Fitness Center Swim Team. She's been doing that for about a month now. Fortunately she chose a sport that the orthopedic surgeon says is GOOD for her knee!
Meagan decided she absolutely HAD to make a dress for the Shakespearian Festival the 9th Graders are having next week. Guess who got to help her make it?
Meagan, I have to admit, is pretty handy, but she hasn't sewn much before. That is probably my fault, but let's not go there . . . Anyway, making an Elizabethan dress with a fitted, lined bodice, a split overskirt, a chemise and an underskirt is a bit of an undertaking for a beginning sewer (is that how you spell that? it looks like sewer - ie, where the toilet leads - seamstress then?) - and sewing all that in a one week period - especially when that week just happens to be the week before taxes are due - is a bit much! Did I mention the dress has grommets and braided trim? We did get the dress done - at 2:45 am the morning it was due. All told, it took us 32 hours to get the entire dress done. Before we started the dress, Meagan wanted to go in to fashion design and costuming as a career; now she is not so sure about that.
Meagan and I still aren't quite back to normal yet. I will have to post a picture of the dress when I get one. One bright note: Meagan's teacher loved it so much she gave her 100 points of extra credit. I have to say this much for Meagan - she actually did about half of the sewing on the dress. Of course, if she hadn't, I wouldn't have finished it for her, so am I rather impressed that she (and I) stuck it out. BTW, David put in all 18 grommets in the dress. He is an excellent grommeter (or whatever you call that), so if you ever need any grommets put in cloth, you know you to call.
I have been so involved with Meagan and her dress and the cars breaking down and taxes that I don't even know what the other kids have been up to. Aren't I a bad mom? Actually, I do know that they all spent spring break with their Aunt Kailien grooming dogs. I guess it's just as well, since I had to work anyway.
I do know that Cameron has been working on a shield for his Shakespeare project. He's in 7th Grade, not 9th Grade, but he's in Quest, ie, the gifted and talented program. All of Quest is working on 9th Grade cirriculum this year, so he gets to do a Shakespeare project. Cameron - and his dad - are making a big wooden shield with the Vernon coat-of-arms on it. As I was looking a stylized wheat sheaf last night for Cameron to put on his shield, it hit me: our coat of arms is a gold shield with a blue horizontal band on it and 3 golden sheafs of wheat. How ironic is that??? I'm incredibly allergic to wheat.
I told David this morning that I never should have married him because of my wheat allergy. He said, "OK." I said, "I'm just kidding!" He said, "Hey, it's better than squashed roses." To which I replied, "What do you mean, squashed roses? They're squashed morning glory."
If you want to see what I'm talking about (or perhaps even your very own stunning family coat of arms) just go to
and enter the last name you are interested in. BTW, the squashed morning glory/roses are on the "Young" coat-of-arms, if you were wondering.
Now, just so Jarom and Amber don't feel slighted (like they're ever going to read this). Jarom wants to make a shield like Cameron is, and Amber wants to make a dress like Meagan. Amber couldn't wait, so she tried sewing a dress all by herself. It didn't work out so well (but then, she's only 7 and has never sewn before). I took pity on her and told her that in a few weeks - after I have recovered from Meagan's dress - I will help her sew a dress. Now I just have to decide if I dare to let her use the sewing machine.
Cameron, Jarom and Amber just got back from Kailien's. I overheard Jarom telling Meagan about his highlight of the weekend. Jarom said, "We had a silly string fight in Kailien's backyard and we sprayed silly string ALL over the place. She didn't even make us clean it up." Come to find out, they used 53 cans of silly string. (Kailien told me that part.)
Ok, that's probably wwaayyy too long for a blog, so I'll finish with a Deep Thought:

Week 2
I just looked at this. I posted it earlier today - which is Saturday 4/15/06. I guess I could just write posts and not really post them and then post them all at once and people - well, assuming there are ever going to be any people besides me who look at this! - would think they were going crazy. I could say, "What do you mean I haven't posted anything for 4 weeks? I have a blog I posted 2 weeks ago." And then they would look and lo and behold, there would be a blog from 2 weeks ago. And maybe even 3 weeks ago. Hmmm . . . what a thought. Isn't technology great?
I wrote this 1/24/06 - yes, it has taken me awhile to post it, but here it is now! (So really, it's like week . . . hmmm . . . I don't even know!)
I was going to do a new blog every Sunday. That is what I told myself. And then I was in church meetings for a total of 6 hours last Sunday. So it didn't happen. I guess it's happening now.
Becky wanted to know where I got the name for my blog. I got it from Julia Cameron's book "The Artist's Way." It's "a course on discovering and recovering your creative self." I rather like it. Anyway, here's the quote:
"Poetry often enters through the window of irrelevance." - M.C. Richards
Doesn't most of life enter through the window of irrelevance?
Anyway, here's what we've been up to:
Me - I'm still working. The place is driving me a little bit crazy. I found out why today. The service guy came up to me and said, "Are you used to the organized chaos here yet?" And that's what it is - organized chaos. Of course, I have had other jobs that were chaotic, but it's been a long time, so I'm still getting used to it.
Meagan - is still injured. David took her to the doctor again yesterday because her knee is not better. He couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, so now we get to take her to an orthopedic specialist. Only problem is, we have to find one that accepts our insurance. Ah, the joy. It wouldn't be quite so bad if the junior high hadn't given Meagan both of her active classes this semester (fitness for life and dance).
Meagan is getting to be quite the artist. Her teacher chose 3 of her 4 art projects from last semester to be in the art show in the spring. I haven't even seen 2 of the projects.
Cameron - got all C's and above on his report card. Thank goodness. Hmmm . . . come to think of it, I Meagan hasn't shown me her report card yet. She is so strange. She'll only show me the report cards where she gets bad grades. Anyway, back to Cameron. I don't know what he's been doing. He's kind of kept to himself this week (and a half).
Jarom - has his final cub scout pack meeting tonight. I think he is getting his arrow of light. I'm letting David be in charge of the scout stuff. Maybe David should get the mother's pin instead of me? I did write Jarom's scout stuff on the calendar. That was my big contribution to scouting.
Amber - has decided that she likes "horror" books. She has started reading the goosebumps series. Odd. Neither of my boys read them. Cameron told Amber, "You can't read those!" Amber asked, "Why not?" He couldn't come up with a good reason, so she's reading them anyway.
David - took the suburban in today to get the muffler and the exhaust pipe replace. They were all rusted out. It only cost $249. And now he says he hears some other weird noises while he's driving it.
David's trying to decide if he wants to enter any art festivals or not. It costs $30 to enter, and then, if you get selected, it costs from $400 - $800 for a booth. The artist also gets to furnish his own tent/awning and racks, tables, etc. Sounds like it could be expensive. I told David to just go ahead and enter, then if he got selected, he could worry about how to come up with the other money. We'll see.

in the beginning . . .
Ok, I have no idea how to do a blog, but Becky tells me it is easy. Don't expect me to post alot. If I do, it will be quite shocking.
The worst thing was trying to come up with a name for the silly thing. I finally found a quote I liked, so ta-da!
What have I been up to? (That's, I guess, the point of this blog since I don't have any deep thoughts - all though I may steal some at some point.)
I started my new job last Monday (January 9). So far, so good. The people are nice, the job is just taxing enough and I get to flee the house on occasion. Oh, yeah, and I get paid. That's the best thing about most jobs, isn't it?
My kids would kill me if they knew I was writing about them on the internet, but I'm going to do it anyway!
Meagan's knee is still injured and she is still hopping around. Her knee is gradually healing. It's a good thing she got a 4-day weekend off from school.
Cameron gets to run his own business for a school project. Can't tell you how excited I am about that! Luckily he has chosen locksmithing type stuff, so I don't have to do much with that - just set up forms on the computer occasionally and calm his father down once in awhile. Oh, yes, and Cameron, too.
Jarom got done with phase 1 of his braces on Friday. Now we get to figure out how to pay for phase 2. Yes, his teeth were REALLY messed up, so he gets the extended version. Too bad we don't have dental insurance that covers braces anymore. C'est la vie.
Amber is enthralled with my old cd player. The one I thought was dead. Somehow Amber resurrected it and rescued the 3 cds that were trapped within its bowels. How'd she do that? She even got the cd player to work again - and it doesn't even take the cds hostage anymore. What a smart 7-year-old!
David is painting, painting, painting. And getting better and better at it. Won't it be nice if he sells some of his paintings someday. He and I are going to look in to getting him signed up for a couple of local art festivals, so we'll see how that goes.
That's about it for now. Oh, yeah, except for my stolen deep thought:
"I hope if dogs ever take over the world, and they chose a king, they don't just go by size, because I bet there are some Chihuahuas with some good ideas."
- Jack Handy
